Process.

I stumbled across this awesome video that shows the process of one artist going from first life drawing sketch to icongraphic form. I found it very cool and i figured since this was a process blog, this might be fitting.

mentally challenged gryffin -- WIP

Hey, for the monster mash prompt I decided to go with this awesome retarded gryffin monster. My friend and I were playing spore hero, and I was totally inspired to create a goofy looking monster of my own. He'd be the one in the background playing the tamborene because the band wants to be nice to him but doesn't trust him with any other instrument. He'd also be a trusty steed. Sort of like cat bus...but waaaay stupider. Reliable...but seriously stupid. Enjoy!

p.s.
yeah..he totally likes to lick dirt.

Photoshop Sketch

Normally when my neighbor leaves her outside light on it bugs the hell out of me. Tonight though, in all the rain, I saw a lovely play of lights on my window. I didn't have any cameras on hand that would be able to photograph it properly, so I decided to paint it in photoshop real quick before I lost it. Foliage was was taken from google, set to black and white. I used the 104 brush from the heavy brush pallet. I swear its my new favorite brush to use....

Space Battle

Just made it in time!
Its silly I know, but I thought I might as well have fun with it.

Wednesday, September 29, 2010

Oh...just felt like sharing. Really happy with this image. Did it in 15 minutes in flash. I love my new cintiq so much *sniffles*
I was so inspired by legend of the guardians. Please see it, if not for the content, then for the amazing work the animators put behind the visuals! The compositions and colors move a relatively cliche story at a new and exciting pace.

Top Secret Background

Wow, I kind of disapeared for a few months there. Awesome stuff everyone!

This is a BG I painted for a top secret super awesome project. Sorry for the bad image quality, I used photobooth (scanner temp out of commission). Otherwise the sky is a little brighter, heh. Did this in watercolors so it will be difficult to change anything (I can photoshop though and I can still add). I was wondering if you guys could let me know what you think? I could use a fresh set of eyes. Thanks!

WIPs

Sorry I haven't posted in a while, I guess I was too lazy to post throughout. But it's probably best that I show this stuff because it's likely that more than half of it won't be finished in the future. At least it's proof that I've been practicing and that the work existed in some form at some point in time.

P.S. I'm also working on a flash pencil test that is relevant to this months category, but none of it looks recognizable enough to post at the moment. I may or may not finish that one...

WIP- Sketch of my house

I thought I needed more practice with layouts, so I did a sketch of my foyer. I plan to color it in photoshop. Hope it turns out.

WIP- Blog Banner

This is a banner I've been working on for my site. I wanted to make the face and skin more dimensional instead of using just flat color, but that didn't work out. I'll try it again later... Color is actually brighter in the psd. Not sure how to avoid that.

WIP- Linoleum Print

I tried my first lino cut and it didn't turn out too well; hard to make a print without a press. I still have some tweaks to make, but otherwise I found a better way to make a print without a press.

Ben's sketch thing

These are some pieces I did for Ben's sketch thing. They aren't really sketches as much as illustrations.

The first is El Chupacabra. He's hungry.

The second is carnage, which I did with acrylic paint. Someone mentioned that it has a slight resemblance to menstruation. I apologize... This was not my intention.

Conflict of the Mind: Redux

Howdy everyone, this is Alex from Uarts. Just wanted to say hello and howdy-do and hope everyone is doing well. Hm, I don't think I could beat around the bush with this one. Right now, I'm currently in preproduction with a revamp of my junior thesis, "Conflict of the Mind." And temporarily adding Redux simply because it sounds a tad cooler even though I dunno what it is though...at the moment. But anyway, this new project is going to be a little bit better (hopefully) than the original. Rather than meeting deadlines, I can take my time shot by shot and make it the way I ultimately want it to be. I'm adding a lot of new moves and in all honesty using...references! I originally thought using references of one self was actually cheating...(I swear, I thought it was.) I never filmed myself doing things like jumping, falling, spinning staves, and kicking with capes on while wearing boxers. I noticed each drawing I make, I'm understanding how the body works and how the body looks foreshortened certain things. I've originally planned the storyboarding to be done sometime in early june even though I started it sometime the last days of May. It's now September and I'm about 75% done with storyboards. The cool thing is, whenever I listen to music or running, I want to add more and more things. The project continues to get bigger and better. Newer ideas, babies getting killed, scrapping older pieces and reworking it. My only setback is probably going to be the soundtrack. I'm leaning towards something more on the time period of baroque while I'm also thinking more of an 8bit chiptune boss theme amongst the painters. Not to mention moves...there's a LOT more moves. Prometheus Punches for all! Hope all is well.

More Progress! Half-way there! I think...

"I'll fly away"

this is something i've been wanting feed back on for a while, its just a reaction to one of my favorite hymns "I'll Fly Away" it kind of reminds me of the very childlike desire, to fly away from everything and everyone.

i have some little details left to do, such as, im toying with making the papers under his arms, sheet music and maybe adding some tape between the pages. What do yall think?

Here are the lyrics

Some glad morning when this life is o'er,
I'll fly away;
To a home on God's celestial shore,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).

[Chorus]
I'll fly away, Oh Glory
I'll fly away; (in the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).

When the shadows of this life have gone,
I'll fly away;
Like a bird from prison bars has flown,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away)

[Chorus]
I'll fly away, Oh Glory
I'll fly away; (in the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).

Just a few more weary days and then,
I'll fly away;
To a land where joy shall never end,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away)

[Chorus]
I'll fly away, Oh Glory
I'll fly away; (in the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).

and a youtube video if you want to hear it.

WIP for August: Wrinkle in Time transformation quick test

Yes, I'm still working on it, but it's looking good...I think. Sorry for the bad quality, but it's only a quick test and I was too cheap to buy istopmotion.

SPACE: TO BOLDLY GO WHERE NO ONE HAS GONE BEFORE!

That's right STAR TREK: The Next Generation! A show I watched religiously as a kid every night with my sister while eating from our snack cups. So it's no wonder that when I think of space I think of Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the Enterprise and his loyal crew member, first officer Commander William Riker who is known to have a love fling with counselor Deanna Troi, and Doctor Beverly Crusher who always has a tri-corder handy to scan you with, and Lieutenant Geordi La Forge, the blind engineer nerd, and officer Lieutenant Worf, the tough Klingon, and my favorite, the android Lieutenant Commander Data who has a love for cats. : ) Yes...I just totally geeked out on all of you.

And for you non-trekkies, some research material:

WIP for August LATE!

Oops! Lost track of time! This is my idea for August: Famous Novels!

I re-read the novel "A Wrinkle in Time" a favorite of mine. My favorite moment is when Mrs. Whatsit turns in to a alien creature that looks a lot like a centaur.

Here is a link to read all about the book:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Wrinkle_in_Time

Soooo, I decided to tackle some old school animation. Below is my video of just timed out rough drawings of the transformation of Mrs. Whatsit.

Modest Proposal: The OpenStudio

Hey guys, I was skype calling Vee and had a thought. Remember how we used to hang out in the studio and chat while working? Now that we're apart I think we should intiate what I am calling OpenStudio, basically we have weekly skype calls where we sit at out desks, work and chat. I noticed that I was suddenly more motivated to draw when talking to Vee about working. You would have to download skype and have a computer capable of using microphones, everyone who owns a Mac here can do them out of the box, trust me. So how's about it? Any takers? We can make a private message to have a listing of our skype names on here or something. Please comment with ideas. Also you don't have to work on stuff for here, just whatever you feel like working on. /endproposal

Neverwhere WIP

I penciled in an idea for a comic page inspired by Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere. Reminiscent of Scott Pilgrim in subspace, Door is pulling Richard through a door to escape Croup and Vandemar. I plan to ink this page eventually using brush. Though I might try again to separate Door and Richard more and make Croup and Vandemar more threatening. Thoughts?

PS- Sorry for the crappy phone pic. As great as iPhone cameras are they weren't made to shoot artwork.

Lord of the Flies -August Prompt (WIP)

 Piggy design
 Ralph design
Simon design
 Jack designs

So, here are some sketches I did towards the beginning of the month for this month's prompt. I chose to do it on Lord of the Flies, because I wanted to force myself to draw convincing children and pre-teens. I hope to have a character line-up of some of the main characters both during their initial arrival on the island, and after Jack takes over.  This was really fun researching a grade-school classic.

Apologize for crappy pictures- they're partly the reason I haven't posted yet. I was annoyed at lack of scanner, but decided to suck it up and get over it. I promise better-quality scans in the future. I'll get a scanner soon.

August 2010 Prompt

PROMPT OF THE MONTH- JULY 2010

FAMOUS NOVELS!

Resources/Ideas for the subject:

So, the votes are in and the August Prompt is going to be (as if the above didn't already tell you) :

FAMOUS NOVELS!

Feel free to get as crazy and creative (like you need to be told, you saucy minxes you =P) with this as you want! This is a pretty widely range topic, so I can't stress enough submitting resources/ sources with whatever work you submit, incase it is unfamiliar! This is a great opportunity to share books that you've thought were interesting too! Again, there is no limit to how many pieces you can create,so just have fun!

Also, if anyone would like to present ideas for future prompts, just let me know, and we'll add it to next month's poll. The next poll will go up in a week or so, but feel free to message me anytime with ideas!

(End speech)

Journey of a Dream take II,... or maybe 4

So I went back to my idea and decided to play around a little, this time with watercolors. These four mini pieces were a lot more fun to do then the first go around, and if I did many more studies like this, I could see myself getting to a finished piece, BUT July is almost over and I'm restless, so I'm looking forward to next month's prompt.

Tattoo Design Clean

I cleaned up the design for the tattoo, anyone have any tips to make the bellows on the accordion look any better? i'm also quite pleased with the design. Anything else anyone sees?

Tattoo Design

This isn't related to the prompt but I wanted to get some advice on a tattoo that i'm designing. The character in it is the two-headed boy. If you're Neutral Milk Hotel fans you'll understand the tattoo from the outset. If not, the song itself is posted here.

This is just to show about how it would be placed on my body.

Aponibolinayen_Watercolor Underpainting_WIP

This is somewhat of a coloring experiment for me. I did a watercolor under painting and I plan to finish it digitally. I'd like to incorporate some of the texture and pooling that watercolor offers. Hopefully it goes well, so we'll see. Otherwise, I'll fall back on the original scans.

As for the fixes, I hope the hair makes more sense now that I added lines to indicate strands and added a unified value. I tried to fix the boob problem, but it seems like it always seems more disproportionate when I'm looking at the scanned version. Hopefully I can fix that in post, so that this girl can live in harmony with gravity.

Journey of a Dream

I went with a experimental digital painting on this one. I was influenced by the legend of the dream catcher from the the Ojibwe tribe.
It is said that the dream catcher, which was given to the people from Asibikaashi or spider women, has several gates. The dreams must journey through the catcher to get to the child, but only the good dreams can survive.

I started with circles as the gates, eight to symbolize the number of legs on a spider. Then I added the wave of dreams being purified as it streams through the gates. I added more web influences with the raining lines. And created a background that felt very dream-like to me.

Hurl Non-Prompt Post

Hey there, this is Hurl, the demented squirrel. It is just a random piece done recently for no specific reason. I had the initial idea of having a little squirrel running around with the mouth of a hippo and decided to go with it. I got inspired to do this after I watched a video on sketchoholic.com of Bobby Chiu giving a tutorial on character design. I initially wanted it to be more realistic-looking, but it came out more cel-shaded-like, which I took a liking to. Originally done in pencil then colored in Photoshop. :)

Spirit Bear Finished

So after working on a couple different versions of a big bear all constellation-y and mystical, I wasn't very happy with where things were going, and decided to loosen up. I started to just have fun doing a more developed version of the laughing cub in one of my sketches, and then decided to take up Rachel's idea of him laughing so hard he falls over... AND I FELL IN LOVE. This was so much fun, and was exactly what I needed to get a little closer to these guys. He's such a funny, chubby little mirth-maker.  So thanks, Rachel =) You helped me definitely key into getting behind these guys.

- - - UPDATE - - -

Hey there folks! In preparation for next month's prompt, I've added a poll onto the side. Feel Free to vote, or Comment here with your own suggestions, and I'll add it to the poll!

Aponibolinayen_WIP_Sketch

Instead of doing a Native American inspired piece, I decided to do a piece on a native Filipino folklore of the Tinguian tribe. It's about a woman named Aponibolinayen, the most beautiful woman, who is a character in many Tinguian stories, but this story is about how she is given away in marriage. In a marriage ceremony in her honor, an old man is given in sacrifice. His head is placed in the ground from which a spring of water flows from his blood. His body is used as a tree to shade the girl and beads form from his blood.

Spirit Bear Sketches WIP- July Prompt

Just a couple more quick sketches. Yadda yadda. couple minutes. I like the grumpy one in the corner.

Antelope God

I took this cue from the pottery on the top of the blog. Also avatar a bit too.

I am... not entirely sure what this is. But I sort of like the idea. I'm just not terribly clear on what the idea is. Quick sketch in maybe 30 minutes?

Totem Pole Critters- Sketch -July Prompt

I'm sort of imagining these along the lines of the guardians from mulan, the cartoon characters that spring forth from their traditional chinese stone counterparts. Except these spring out from the totem poles. These were specifically inspired by this totem pole: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Totem_Pole_Groombridge.JPG
